The Braves will carry a four-game winning streak into Wednesday’s game The Atlanta Braves will try to make it five-straight wins and clinch another series victory in the process when they continue a four-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday night. The Braves took the opener Monday 5-4 in 11 innings. Some timely hitting backed Chris Sale in a 6-2 win Wednesday. Charlie Morton will look to keep things going Wednesday night while righty Slade Cecconi will get the start for Arizona.
Morton will make his 17th start of the season Wednesday and will be looking to build some momentum heading into the All-Star break. June was an up and down ride for the veteran right-hander who alternated good and bad starts throughout the month. He began July by allowing four runs (three earned) in 5 1⁄3 innings against the Giants. Morton has a 4.16 ERA in 14 career starts against the Diamondbacks. He faced them twice last season where he allowed seven runs over 12 2⁄3 innings. Morton has a 5.11 ERA in eight career starts at Chase Field.
The 2024 season has largely been a struggle for Cecconi who has failed to make it through five innings in five of his last six starts. He allowed eight hits and five runs in 4 2⁄3 innings in his last outing against the Padres. Wednesday’s game will be Cecconi’s first career appearance against Atlanta.
Atlanta’s offense has been the difference maker so far in this series scoring 11 runs over the first two games. Adam Duvall delivered a big three-run homer in Tuesday’s win. After struggling through the first part of the season, Duvall’s bat has woken up in July. He’s hitting .323/.364/.613 with three doubles and two homers through eight games this month.
The Braves bullpen slammed the door again Tuesday night with Jesse Chavez and A.J. Minter combining for 3 2⁄3 scoreless innings in support of Sale. Atlanta’s bullpen leads the National League and is second in the majors with a 2.88 ERA.
First pitch for Wednesday’s game is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports South.
