The rookie had his most impressive outing yet in the majors and homers from Ozzie and Marcell gave him all that he needed for the win. After a really sloppy game Friday night that resulted in a loss to Philadelphia, the Braves faced a tough matchup with Cy Young candidate Ranger Suarez on the mound for the Phillies and Spencer Schwellenbach starting for Atlanta.
Things started very well for Atlanta, with Schwellenbach working a 1-2-3 first, with one strikeout, but one deep flyout to Bohm. It got even better from there, as Jarred Kelenic yanked a line drive ground rule double down the first base line. Ozzie singled him home and after two strikeouts, Marcell Ozuna crushed a homer to center field on a ball below the zone, giving the Braves a 3-0 lead in the first against the tough lefty.

Schwellenbach allowed a couple of singles in the second, but nothing hard hit, and a great throw from Duvall and tag from Arcia at second helped him keep the game scoreless. After nothing from the bottom of the Braves’ lineup in the second, a swinging bunt single was the first of three consecutive singles off Schwellenbach that scored a Philly run, but SPencer held them there with two strikeout and a flyout.
The next couple half-innings were fairly uneventful, but a leadoff walk from Matt Olson, followed by a scorched double from Ozuna set up two runners in scoring position with no outs for Atlanta. Suarez struck out Murphy and Duvall before dubiously intentionally walking Arcia, but made it academic by inducing a pop-out from Eli White. That was a big opportunity missed for Atlanta to add on some runs. Schwellenbach continued to keep the Phillies’ offense down, however, and the top of the order showed back up for Atlanta in the fifth. Jarred Kelenic managed a leadoff single, having another solid game at the top of the order, and right-handed Ozzie Albies destroyed a homer 113.7 MPH off the bat, the hardest hit ball of his career by over 2 MPH.

Schwellenbach ended his outing with a strong sixth, finishing with 6.0 innings of 1 run ball with 6 strikeouts, no walks, and no homers. That’s a really good outing for the rookie who continues to develop and impress at the major league level.
AJ Minter was the first out of the pen for Atlanta in the seventh and delivered a clean inning. Joe Jimenez got the eighth, after only a Riley walk for the Atlanta offense, and Jimenez worked around a walk to preserve the four run lead. The offense again had nothing to offer in the home eighth and Raisel Iglesias got the ninth with the four run lead. Raisel had no problems shutting down the Phillies in order in the ninth and securing the Braves’ win.
