Smith-Shawver made his season debut on May 23 against the Cubs at Wrigley Field where he allowed three hits and struck out four over 4 1⁄3 scoreless innings. However, he alerted the team’s training staff that he felt some discomfort in his side early in his outing but continued to pitch. An examination revealed a strained oblique and he was then placed on the injured list.
Smith-Shawver was ranked as the Braves’ top prospect in Battery Power’s preseason Top 30. He made his major league debut last season and it looked like he was about to get an opportunity to nail down a rotation spot before the injury. The Braves ended up turning to Spencer Schwellenbach who has made six starts.
Smith-Shawver will need several outings to build back up and will be a rotation option at some point after the All-Star break.
