Workinger drove in six runs and doubled in the win. The bright spot on the day for Atlanta’s minor league affiliates happened in Rome as the Emperors shutout Winston-Salem while scoring a whopping 13 runs. There was plenty of action on Friday, so let us dive in.
(36-43) Gwinnett Stripers 4, (41-38) Memphis Redbirds 8
Luke Waddell, 3B: 2-4, 3B, 2B, RBI, 2 R
Nacho Alvarez Jr., SS: 1-4, RBI, BB
Andrew Velazquez, 2B: 1-2, RBI, R, BB
Dylan Dodd, SP: 4.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Box Score
Gwinnett was doubled up on Friday, losing by an 8-4 final against Memphis.
The first frame went scoreless for both squads, but the Stripers scored first in the bottom of the second frame. Andrew Velazquez singled prior to Sandy Leon and Skye Bolt working back-to-back walks to load the bases. Nacho Alvarez Jr. followed that up with a walk of his own, scoring Velazquez to make it 1-0.
However, Memphis tagged Gwinnett starter Dylan Dodd for three runs in the top of the third to make it a 3-1 game. The Stripers were able to get one of those runs back in the home half of the inning. Luke Waddell laced a one-out double before Velazquez worked a walk and both stole second and third base. Leon followed that up with a groundout, scoring Waddell to make it 3-2.
Things went from bad to worse for the Stripers as the Redbirds scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-2. Memphis tacked on in the top of the seventh, scoring an additional run to make it 7-2.
The Stripers attempted to mount somewhat of a comeback in the bottom of the eighth. Eli White drew a one-out walk before Luke Waddell tripled him home to cut the deficit to 7-3. Velazquez then scored Waddell on a sac fly to make it a 7-4 game.
While Memphis scored once more in the top of the ninth to make it 8-4 and that would prove to be enough to keep the Stripers at bay in the loss.
(34-38) Mississippi Braves 1, (41-32) Montgomery Biscuits 2
Cal Conley, SS: 2-3, R, BB
Cody Milligan, CF: 2-4, 2B
Yolmer Sanchez, 2B: 1-4, 2B, RBI
Luis De Avila, SP: 7 IP, 2 H, 7 K
Box Score
Despite getting a masterful performance on the mound by starter Luis De Avila and outhitting Montgomery, the Braves fell to the Biscuits by one run.
De Avila was simply phenomenal, tossing seven scoreless frames while only allowing two hits. The lefty also did not walk a single batter while sitting down seven on strikes on the night.
While their starter was doing his thing on the bump, his offense gave him some run support — albeit minimal. In the bottom of the fifth with one out, Cal Conley singled before moving up to second base on a balk. With Conley in scoring position, Yolmer Sanchez doubled into right field to score him and give De Avila and the Braves a 1-0 lead.
While De Avila was able to hold things for a majority of the game, the Biscuits tagged reliever Jake McSteen for two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 2-1 lead over Mississippi.
Things didn’t work out in the bottom of the ninth, as the Braves went down in order to cap off the loss.

In the top of the fourth, Dawson Dimon worked a one-out single before scoring on a Ceballos double to extend the Rome lead to 4-0. Then, Workinger launched a two-run homer — his first of two on the day — to make it a 6-0 game. But the Emperors didn’t stop there.
