Braves couldn't get anything going with the bats in a night-session loss to St Louis. If you had told Brian Snitker before the game that Bryce Elder was going to pitch 6 inning with just 2 earned runs allowed, he would’ve been overjoyed. Especially when you consider how long it’s been since Elder has pitched in the majors.
Well that’s just what he got. Elder’s final line for the game was 6 innings pitched, 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 4 strikeouts, 0 walks. Everything the Braves could’ve asked for and more for the 27th man for a double-header. Unfortunately the offense no-showed the night session of a long Wednesday and the Braves took the 4-1 loss.
Matthew Liberatore dominated the Braves for 6 innings, allowing 2 hits, 0 earned runs, 0 walks and striking out 8. The Braves one run came off of the Cardinals’ bullpen after he left game.
For Elder, the only trouble he had all nights was in the third inning, which started with him retiring the first two hitters of the frame. He then allowed a single to Michael Siani, a single to Masyn Winn, and a 2-run double to Alec Burleson. And that was it. Two runs, boom-boom-boom, in three batters and all the damage the Cardinals would do against him.
The only offense for Atlanta came in the 8th, ironically also with 2-out and no one on. Ramon Laureano doubled with 2-out, followed by an infield single from Sean Murphy, and then Jarred Kelenic lined an RBI single to right field to give Atlanta their first (and only) run of the game and made 2-1.
Once the Braves cut in to 1, Grant Holmes couldn’t hold it there. He gave up a 1-out double to Burleson and then an RBI single to Paul Goldschmidt. Goldschmidt then stole 2nd, and scored on an RBI single from Brendan Donovan and suddenly the Braves were down 4-1. Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley closed it out in the 9th.
The Braves fall 44-34 on the year and now 8 games back of the Phillies in the NL East. They play their third in 30 hours tomorrow afternoon in Chicago to make up a rain-out game from March. Chris Sale will be on the mound, first pitch is at 4:10 ET.
