Elder made 31 starts for the Braves in 2023 and was rewarded with a trip to the All-Star Game for his first half performance. He wore down in the second half and was left off the Opening Day roster after the additions of Reynaldo López and Chris Sale. He made his season debut on April 22 in Miami and allowed two runs combined over his first two starts. However, things went south from there as Elder was lit up for 15 earned runs over his next 11 2⁄3 innings before being sent back to Gwinnett.
His performance at Triple A has been a mix of really good and really bad. He allowed six runs in 4 1⁄3 innings in his first start after the demotion. The then began a three game stretch where he allowed two earned runs and struck 29 hitters over 22 innings. He struggled his last time out though allowing eight hits and six runs in just four innings.
