Reynaldo Lopez and the Braves will look to stay hot Tuesday against the Cardinals. The Atlanta Braves will try to even their series with the St. Louis Cardinals when the two teams meet again Tuesday night at Busch Stadium. The Braves mounted a late comeback attempt in Monday’s opener but ultimately fell 4-3. Reynaldo Lopez will get the start Tuesday while the Cardinals will go with right-hander Kyle Gibson.
Adding Lopez is one of the best moves of the offseason that no one is talking about. Through 13 starts, Lopez has a 1.57 ERA and a 2.73 FIP to go along with a 25.9% strikeout rate. His 1.57 ERA would lead the majors if he had enough innings to qualify. Lopez wasn’t sharp in his last outing allowing seven hits and a walk but managed to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard with five more scoreless innings. He hasn’t allowed a run in either of his last two starts (11 innings) and has 14 strikeouts and just two walks over that span.
Gibson will make his first start since June 14 in Tuesday’s matchup. Gibson was scheduled to start in Miami on June 19 but was scratched due to back tightness. He has been one of the Cardinals most reliable rotation options posting a 3.44 ERA and a 4.14 FIP over 83 2⁄3 innings. Gibson turned in one of his best starts of the season in his last start against the Cubs where he allowed two hits and struck out six over seven scoreless innings.
Monday’s loss was a frustrating one in that Atlanta just wasn’t able to get their offense going against Lance Lynn. Austin Riley hit his eighth home run of the season in the fifth inning and the Braves weren’t able to scratch across any more runs until the ninth. It looked like Ozzie Albies tied the game in the eighth with a deep drive to right center that was caught just short of the wall. Per Baseball Savant, Albies’ deep fly would have been a homer in 16/30 parks.
Riley finished with two hits to continue his torrid stretch. Jarred Kelenic went hitless in the game, snapping a 10-game hitting streak. Ramon Laureano got another start in right field and came up with a big run scoring hit in the ninth. Laureano is 8-for-27 with three doubles and a homer in nine games with Atlanta.
Orlando Arcia left Monday’s game with dizziness that was brought on by the high temperatures in St. Louis. Zack Short finished the game at shortstop. Brian Snitker said after the game that Arcia was given an IV of fluids and would likely sit out Tuesday’s game.
First pitch for Tuesday’s game is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports South.
