Williams brings some versatility to the bench. The Braves made a minor roster move on Tuesday, placing outfielder Brian Anderson on the 10 day IL with a lower body bacterial infection and calling up utility man Luke Williams to take his place. The move to place Anderson on the injured list is retroactive to June 22, so he could return a week from now.
Williams, 27, appeared in four games with the team earlier this season, most of which came as a fill-in for Austin Riley at third base. Williams is quite versatile defensive as he has appeared at every position on the diamond — including the mound! — during his career, but the bat has never come along for the ride.
Anderson has only five plate appearances with Atlanta since he was signed earlier this month. The veteran outfielder saw his playing time reduced to effectively zero with the signing and strong play of Ramon Laureano, relegating him to 5th outfielder duties even with Ronald Acuña Jr. and Michael Harris injured.
The Braves continue their series in St. Louis on Tuesday night as ERA leader Reynaldo Lopez takes on veteran righty Kyle Gibson. First pitch is 7:45 p.m. ET.
