Max Fried and the Braves will try to lock down a series win Sunday against the Yankees. After seeing their winning streak end Saturday, the Atlanta Braves will try to get back in the win column Sunday when they wrap up a three-game series against the New York Yankees. Atlanta took the opener Friday by a score of 8-1, but fell in an early hole Saturday in an 8-3 loss. Max Fried will get the start for the Braves Sunday while the Yankees will go with lefty Nestor Cortes.
Fried has been excellent since a pair of rough outing to start the season, posting a 2.16 ERA and a 3.18 FIP over his last 12 starts and 79 innings. He allowed one run and struck out six over 5 1⁄3 innings in his last start against Detroit. Fried has a 2.25 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees. Sunday will be his first career start at Yankee Stadium.
Injuries limited Nestor Cortes to just 12 starts last season, but he has recovered and pitched well for the Yankees in 2024. He’s coming off a good start against the Orioles where he struck out six over six scoreless innings. Cortes has allowed a total of two runs over his last 13 innings. Sunday will be his first career start against the Braves.
Atlanta managed just four hits in Saturday’s loss. Two of those hits were homers by Marcell Ozuna and Travis d’Arnaud. The Braves are tied for 12th in the majors with 84 home runs for the season.
Austin Riley went 1-for-4 in Saturday’s loss but is 13-for-26 with four doubles and four homers over his last eight games. Jarred Kelenic extended his hitting streak to nine-straight games with an eighth inning double. Kelenic is hitting .290/.343/.500 with a 136 wRC+ in June.
While the Braves have seen an uptick in recent days offensively, that has not extended to shortstop Orlando Arcia, who remains in a deep slump. Arcia struck out in all three of his plate appearances Saturday night. He is 10-for-68 with 18 strikeouts through 19 games in June. Since May 1, Arcia is hitting .171/.206/.293 with a 36 wRC+ in 175 plate appearances.
Adam Duvall was out of the lineup for Saturday’s game and has been slumping as well. Duvall has just nine hits in 66 at-bats since the start of June and has struck out 22 times. Most of Duvall’s struggles have come against right-handed pitchers against whom he is hitting .096 in 98 plate appearances. He’s performed well against lefties producing a 160 wRC+ and is expected to be back in the lineup Sunday against the lefty Cortes.
First pitch Sunday is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports Southeast.
