Law has the Braves going the prep route at 24 In an updated mock draft from the Athletic on Wednesday, Keith Law ran through another mock draft and this time had the Atlanta Braves going in a different direction at 24th. There has been a significant college lean for most publications, but with law projecting such connections as Ryan Waldschmidt and Jurrangelo Cijntje to fall before Atlanta gets a crack at them Law has the Braves going with California prep righty Braylon Doughty.
Doughty, an Oklahoma State commit, is seen as a bit of an underslot option here, which Law feels the Braves could then using the savings from to get another prep arm at 66 similar to their approach in 2022. Doughty has some Braves-ish traits, mostly in his athleticism and arm speed, and his fastball has ticked up this season to the mid to upper 90’s. Doughty also mixes in a pair of breaking balls, though like many prep arms the changeup is still a work in progress. The hope with players like Doughty is that their athletic traits can help them in their development of command and an offspeed pitch, and Doughty presently has better command than a typical prep arm.
