After collecting just seven XBH with Mississippi, Nacho has 6 in 6 games for Gwinnett and is off to a sensational start (34-36) Gwinnett Stripers 3, (29-40 Charlotte Knights) 4, F/10
Box Score
Nacho Alvarez Jr., SS: 2-for-5, 2R, RBI, HR, 2B, .464/.483/.893
Luke Williams, 3B: 1-for-4, RBI, .289/.342/.479
Drake Baldwin, DH: 0-for-3, .348/.464/.609
Allan Winans, SP: 7.0IP 5H 2R 1ER 0BB 8K, 3.17 ERA
Unfortunately for the Stripers, the offense couldn’t really get it going last night despite the gem by Allan Winans in a tough 3-4 loss. The scoring got started in the first inning when Nacho Alvarez Jr. connected on his third homer since being promoted to Triple-A Gwinnett, this one of the solo variety.
NACHO IS UNREAL Alvarez Jr. launches a @SoFi homer to left to give us an early one run lead! pic.twitter.com/n5sztrluGB— Gwinnett Stripers (@GoStripers) June 18, 2024
The Stripers would add on another run in the third inning when Nacho Alvarez Jr would connect on his third double, before taking third on a fly out to center by Drake Baldwin, and coming around to score on a Yuri Gurriel single. It was the Nacho show early on in the game. The two run lead lasted one inning as the Knights would come back in the bottom of the fourth and score two runs, one earned, of their own off Allan Winans.
The game sat 2-2 for four innings until we entered the 9th inning when Eli White lead off the inning with a single. Eli would then steal second, his 16th stolen base of the season, and quickly score after Luke Williams doubled him in to take the 3-2 lead. After Luke Waddell lined out to the second baseman, Luke Williams got caught stealing third, a critical error, and Sandy León struck out to end the inning. With the Stripers clinging on to a 3-2 lead, Matt Carasiti relieved Ken Giles and gave up the game tying homer to the first hitter he saw to tie the game at 3-3. The Stripers went down quickly in the 10th, with Andrew Velasquez striking out, J.P. Martinez flying out, and Nacho Alvarez Jr. grinding out to first base.
Charlotte would quickly take advantage of the runner leading off the inning at second, and take the lead off win with a Jared Walsh single to start the inning and ultimately end the game.

Mitch Farris made his Double-A debut last night and was okay, but the offense did him absolutely no favors in a 6-0 loss to the Smokies. After leading off the game with two quick ground outs and a caught stealing, the Smokies went up 1-0 on the second batter of the game when Matt Shaw connected on a solo shot. The Mississippi Braves would go 1-2-3 in the top of the second before Haydn McGeary hit his own homer to lead off the second inning and put the Smokies up 2-0. The Smokies would add another pair of runs in the third inning, to extend their lead to 4-0. They, the Smokies, would lead off the fourth with a single before Rolddy Munoz replaced Mitch Farris to end Farris’s Double-A debut. Munoz would get it done in the fourth, but give up a solo shot to start the fifth inning to extend the Smokies lead to 5-0. The Smokies would add on their sixth, and final run, in the 6th inning and the Mississippi Braves had absolutely no counter throughout the game. They would go 1-2-3 in six of the nine innings, collected just three hits (three singles), and walk zero times. It was a rather listless effort by Mississippi who fell to five games under .500 and 7.5 games out of first in the first half of the season. The lone positive out of the game was that pitcher Landon Harper worked an effective final two innings of the game - holding the Smokies scoreless for their final two innings.

Drue Hackenberg, SP: 7.0IP 4H 0ER 1BB 7K, 3.64 ERA
In a game that took just two hours and seven minutes, it was strong pitching that carried the Emperors to their 35th win of the season. Building off of a solid start last week, Drue Hackenberg got it done - cruising through seven innings of four hit baseball. Drue worked into, and out of, trouble efficiently by inducing a lot of weak contact. In the first, it was a fly out that turned into a double play to end the inning. In the second, it was a more traditional double play as he got Miguel Ugueto to ground into a double play. In the third, it was a pair of strike outs and another ground out for another quick inning. Drue ran into some trouble in the sixth inning when a walk, stolen base, and passed ball gave him his first runner at third, but Drue shut it done once again by striking out the final hitter of the inning.
Drue was relieved by Samuel Strickland, who did his best Hackenberg impression, giving up a walk and single before closing out the inning with another zero on the board. Shay Schanaman replaced Samuel and worked an effective inning himself, giving up just a single and maintaining a 0-0 game.
The reason most of this recap was about the pitching was because, frankly, the Emperors did close to nothing with the bat. They had just as many hits with body parts, as they did with the bat (2), and walked four times but were never able to connect on that big hit until the 9th inning with Adam Zebrowski connected on his fifth homer of the season - this one of the walk off variety giving the Emperors a 1-0 win.

Some cool notes from the game: The Emperors magic number is now one, and have a chance to win the first half of the SAL-South - guaranteeing them a playoff spot. Rome PxP man Gavin Booker also had a pretty crazy stat of his own:

It was Jeremy Reyes day for the Augusta GreenJackets and unfortunately the offense just could not get it going in a tight 2-1 loss. The Red Sox quickly went up 1-0 in the first when Antonio Anderson singled and scored on a double to Isaiah Drake. Reyes wouldn’t run into any other trouble until the fourth inning when he loaded the bases on three singles before ultimately striking out Stanley Tucker and getting Nazzan Zanetello to fly out to end the threat and keep the game 1-0. Outside of a double by the Red Sox, pitching dominated the bulk of the game - staying 1-0 until the top half of the 8th when Bryson Worrell would hit a one out triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Kade Kern to tie the game at 1 each.
The GreenJackets would threaten with a Jacob Godman walk, and Isaiah Drake reaching on an error by the shortstop, but Luis Sanchez would ground out to third and end the threat - keeping the game tied at 1-1. They would threaten again in the ninth when Will Verdung started the inning off with a double. Jeremy Caledonio would strike out, followed by a ground out by Cam Magee which would move Verdung to third but with two outs. Leiker Figueroa would walk, and then steal second to give the GreenJackets two on (second and third) with two outs but Bryson Worrell would strike out to end the inning - keeping the game tied at 1-1. Unfortunately in the bottom half of the ninth Juan Sanchez, working his second inning, ran into some two out trouble including a walk off single by Antonio Anderson giving the Red Sox the 2-1 win.

Wanted to make note of the fact that Ian Anderson made his first rehab appearance since the surgery and looked much better than expected - pitching two perfect innings and picking up four strikeouts. A follower of mine, Logan Matthews, was at the outing and had some velocity readings from the outing:

Luis Guanipa continued to get on base, going 1-for-3, with a double and walk and now has a cool 1.037 OPS on the season - I expect him to potentially get that move up to full season ball shortly as there isn’t much competition for him down in the complex league.
