The Braves’ offense will have its work cut out for them Wednesday against Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal. The Atlanta Braves will try to complete the sweep Wednesday when they wrap up a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers. The Braves have gotten some great pitching and just enough offense to win a pair of 2-1 games over the first two games of the series. Wednesday’s game will feature a marquee pitching matchup between Atlanta’s Reynaldo Lopez and Detroit’s Tarik Skubal.
The Braves will be looking to complete a 5-1 homestand behind Lopez, who has been one of the best stories in the majors so far this season. Lopez has successfully made the transition back from the bullpen to the rotation. His 1.69 ERA would be tops in the majors if he had enough innings to qualify. Lopez allowed two hits and tied a season-high with eight strikeouts over six scoreless innings in his last start against the Orioles. He’s allowed two earned runs or less in 11 of his 12 starts this season.
Like Lopez, Skubal has turned in a fine season and has taken the next step for the Tigers. He enters Wednesday’s start tied for second in the majors with 2.7 fWAR. His 2.20 ERA is the sixth best mark in the majors. Skubal allowed six hits and four runs over 6 1⁄3 innings in his last start against the Astros. Wednesday’s matchup will be his first career start against the Braves.
Jarred Kelenic singled to lead off Tuesday’s win and is 6-for-18 since moving into the top spot of the lineup. Austin Riley went hitless Tuesday, snapping a four-game hitting streak. He is 8-for-16 on the homestand with three doubles, three homers, six runs scored and has driven in eight runs.
Wednesday’s game has an early start time of 12:20 p.m. ET and can be seen on Bally Sports South.
