Hurston Waldrep will make his major league debut for the Braves Sunday. Another top pitching for the Atlanta Braves is set for his major league debut. 2023 first round pick Hurston Waldrep is with the Braves in Washington and will start Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman.
Hurston Waldrep will start tomorrow against the Nats. Fried is pushed back to Tuesday— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) June 8, 2024
Waldrep advanced through four levels last season after the Braves used the 24th pick in the draft on him. He went to major league Spring Training but was sent back to start at Double A Mississippi for the 2024 season. He got off to a bit of a slow start there but made nine starts while posting a 2.92 ERA and a 3.07 FIP in 49 1⁄3 innings. Waldrep was promoted to Gwinnett last week and posted a career-high 11 strikeouts while allowing three runs in six innings.
Starting Waldrep will push Max Fried’s start back to Tuesday in Baltimore. Spencer Schwellenbach remains of the active roster and would be slated to start Wednesday’s game against the Orioles. Atlanta will need to make a 40-man roster move to add Waldrep, but have both Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuña Jr. available to move to the 60-day injured list.
