Schwellenbach struggled in loss to Sox | Paul Rutherford-USA TODAY Sports
The Braves only mustered one hit, and rookie Spencer Schwellenbach struggled. Spencer Schwellenbach and the Atlanta Braves took on Nick Pivetta and the Boston Red Sox in an early afternoon game in Boston. The Braves were looking for their first three game win streak since May eleventh when they won four in a row.
Spencer Schwellenbach started off strong, retiring the first three batters faced. He was able to get out of the inning on eleven pitches while inducing three groundballs. The second inning was not so kind to him. Rafael Devers led off the second inning with a opposite solo shot over the green monster. This was off a pitch that almost looked unhittable.

This was then followed by a single to Tyler O’Neill on an 0-2 count. Schwellenbach then walked Dominic Smith to put two runners on with zero outs, followed by a double by David Hamilton that scored O’Neill making the score 0-2. After a fly out, Reese McGuire hit a sac fly to left field that made the score 0-3. Schwellenbach was finally able to end the inning with a strikeout to Duran.
After his rough third inning, Schwellenbach seemed to settle down a bit. Although he gave up a single, He was able to induce three ground outs. Schwellenbach had seven groundouts in three innings.
The fourth inning started off well for Schwellenbach after he struck out Dominic Smith on three pitches. It was a nasty combination of curve, changeup, changeup. He then induced a lineout and another strikeout to go three-up-three down.
In the fifth, the game really started to go downhill. With one out Duran hit a triple, followed by a valdez double to make the score 0-4. After striking out Refsnyder, Schwellenbach intentionally walked Devers. This did not save more runs from happening as O’Neill singled to score Valdez, ending Schwellenbach’s afternoon with the score 0-5. Ray Kerr came in the game and promptly gave up a double to Dominic Smith. The fifth ended with the Braves down 0-6. Schwellenbach ended the game with 4.2 innings pitched with seven hits, six earned runs, two walks, and four strikeouts.
Kerr stayed in the game for the sixth. He was able to go three-up-three down, but Kelenic looks to have possibly been injured on the final out of the sixth.
Jarred Kelenic dove and made a catch to end the sixth inning, but appeared to roll over his right wrist (his glove hand) while doing so. It did not look good. He walked off the field with head athletic trainer George Poulis and manager Brian Snitker.— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) June 5, 2024
He did come back out for the bottom of the seventh though.
In the seventh Refsnyder hit a double followed by another Devers HR to make the game 0-8. In the eighth inning Jimmy Herget replaced Kerr and gave up a HR to Jarren Duran. The Red Sox got their revenge on the Braves ultimately scoring nine runs.
The Braves’ offense did not start off any better than the Red Sox in the first inning. Harris, Riley, and Ozuna were retired in order by Nick Pivetta. In the second inning it looked like there may be a spark as Matt Olson kept his on-base hot streak going by leading off with a walk, but this was followed by back-to-back strikeouts to Albies and d’Arnaud and a popup from Adam Duvall.
Pivetta had no trouble taking care of business in the Braves’ half of the third inning, sitting down all three batters he faced. Up to this point, nine out of ten hitters had been retired.
In the fourth, the Austin Riley was able to end Pivetta’s no hit bid with a single to right field. Ozuna, who has had tremendous success against Pivetta in his career, struck out following Riley’s single. It looked like Matt Olson may get on base with another walk when Pivetta pitched three straight pitches that were not even close to the zone, but then he popped up to second base on a full count. Albies was able to get on with a walk to put two runners on with two outs bringing d’Arnaud up to the plate who promptly struck out on three pitches.
If Schwellenbach was hoping for some run support after his solid fourth inning, he was out of luck. The top of the fifth was what seemed par for the course with the Braves offense as they yet again when three-up-three down with a pop up from Duvall, groundout from Kelenic, and strikeout from Arcia.
The offense sputtered from there. There was not a single base runner outside of Michael Harris reaching on an error in top of the ninth. Needless to say, the offense struggled mightily in a game that looked like they had the advantage. This 0-9 loss stung.
The Braves will play the Nationals tomorrow with Reynaldo Lopez taking the mound.
