We are about eight weeks from the trade deadline. What position do you think the Braves should target? Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Atlanta Braves fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.
Despite losing Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuña Jr, the Atlanta Braves still find themselves in good shape at 33-24. They are seven games behind the Philadelphia Phillies entering play Tuesday, but have a healthy 5.5 game advantage in the Wild Card standings. They certainly have not played their best baseball yet either. The pitching staff has exceeded expectations, especially in the wake of Strider’s injury, but the offense has yet to go on an extended run.
We are about eight weeks from the trade deadline. When Strider went down, the thinking was that they would need to add a pitcher for the stretch run. The performances of Max Fried, Chris Sale and Reynaldo López have quieted those concerns for now. Still, there is injury history for Sale and Lopez is already nearing his innings total for last season when he was a reliever. Keeping those guys healthy and fresh is a major priority for the remainder of the season.
With Acuña out, Atlanta has shifted Jarred Kelenic and Adam Duvall from a platoon situation into every day roles. Kelenic has a 61 wRC+ in his career against left-handed pitchers. Duvall has a 92 wRC+ in 40 games this season but does have a .352 xwOBA which provides some confidence.
With all of that said, this week’s SB Nation Reacts question is. What is the Braves’ biggest need? It would be easy to say both and Alex Anthopoulos may in fact address both. But at this juncture, we are looking for what fans think should be the top priority.
